# Overview of triPOS

triPOS is a semi-integrated card payment processing solution offered by Worldpay, providing merchants with secure and flexible transaction handling solutions through their partner while reducing the merchant’s PCI scope. By integrating with various point of sale (POS) systems and mobile devices, Payrix Pro partners can allow merchants to accept card payments. The triPOS system is designed for developers to simplify their card-present integration, reduce PCI scope, and provide access to multiple Europay, Mastercard, and Visa (EMV)-compatible devices without the need for a complex EMV card brand certification.

You can find more information by visiting and creating an account for the [Worldpay Developer Engine](https://developerengine.fisglobal.com/), which contains more detailed information and API references for each of the Express Gateway and triPOS services mentioned below.

## Express Gateway

The triPOS [Express Gateway](https://developerengine.fisglobal.com/apis/express) is the interface between a POS system or mobile device and the Worldpay payment processor.

> [!WARNING]
> Important!
>
> Payrix Pro partners can only use the Express Gateway to process payments through the Worldpay (CORE or RAFT) platform.

The Express Gateway integrates the payment acceptance capabilities of the payment processor, including credit cards, within its existing POS system. The Express Gateway supports the tokenization and encryption of sensitive cardholder data, managing communication between the merchant’s POS system and the Worldpay processing platform to ensure the highest levels of security during payment captures, authorizations, response handling, and settlements.

In addition to being highly secure, the Express Gateway is designed to offer the most flexibility possible, making integration easier than ever within various POS systems and terminals.

> [!NOTE]
> Note
>
> The Express Gateway has its own set of endpoints that can be called directly for actions that don’t require the customer to be present and interacting with the terminal. The most common use cases of direct Express Gateway calls are Returns, Reversals, or Voids of existing transactions.

## triPOS Payment Gateway Structure

The [triPOS Payment Gateway Structure](https://developerengine.fisglobal.com/apis/tripos) provides a framework to facilitate electronic payment transactions using a layered integration between the triPOS Express Gateway, the specific triPOS service (see below), and the Worldpay payment processor. Each integration type below will be determined as applicable to your business model or not during your [Scope of Work process](/v1/docs/integrate-tripos).

### triPOS Direct

[triPOS Direct](https://developerengine.fisglobal.com/apis/tripos/tripos-direct) facilitates integrated payments in various point-of-sale systems.

This downloadable package is directly installed on Windows or Linux machines, acting as the interface between the Express Gateway and the physically connected POS system.

### triPOS Cloud

[triPOS Cloud](https://developerengine.fisglobal.com/apis/tripos/tripos-cloud) enables the same payment processing capabilities with a cloud-based API solution.

This is essentially the same as direct, except the service is hosted in Azure and communicates using the REST API provided for Lane (device management) or Transaction (payment acceptance).

### triPOS Mobile

[triPOS Mobile](https://developerengine.fisglobal.com/apis/tripos/tripos-mobile) enables processing capabilities for mobile payment applications.

These downloadable SDKs are designed to integrate with a merchant’s iOS or Android product before publication to their respective application stores.

A secure payment integration platform from Worldpay that reduces PCI scope for business software applications. triPOS is compatible with many devices and connects authorization providers with a broad suite of transaction protocols.

The movement of funds between a customer (cardholder or eCheck account holder) and a merchant to purchase a good or service.

An entity that can process transactions and has been onboarded through a Payrix Pro partner.

The location of a transaction’s origin. Also known as *point of service*.

A PayFac-as-a-service platform. Software companies can act as payment facilitators without taking on the associated risks, compliance burdens, and investment.

A standard designed to increase the security of payment card transactions through the use of a chip embedded in credit, debit, and prepaid cards.

A gateway used by Payrix Pro for triPOS integrations. All transactions flow through this gateway, which serves as the processing engine behind all Worldpay APIs. Designed as a routing gateway for both Worldpay acquired and non-acquired merchants, Express enables developers certifying to Express APIs to integrate payment solutions with the processor of a merchant’s choice. Worldpay's server-side, web service payment applications use secure point-to-point encryption and tokenization methods.

The company that's responsible for processing and settling the transactions that are initiated by a payment facilitator’s merchants. Along with the acquiring bank, a relationship with a processor is necessary to operate as a payment facilitator.

A business that enables financial transactions with customers from various channels such as credit cards and debit cards or bank accounts. Worldpay is the primary processor of the Payrix Pro platform, which offers limited omnichannel integration options for compatibility with third-party processors TSYS, Chase Payment Tech, Fiserv, and Global Payments.

The process of replacing sensitive payment method information, such as card numbers and checking account numbers, with a unique Payrix Pro platform token to enhance security for transactions and streamline future customer purchases or recurring payments.
