Use Case: Set Up a Transaction Fee

You can charge a fee on a per-transaction basis to generate revenue through your account for every transaction that is authorized or captured by a merchant. You can apply a transaction fee to an individual merchant account, or set up a fee that applies to a group of merchants. This tutorial shows you how to create a new transaction fee for a single merchant or a group.

Set Up Transaction Fees

Ensure that you complete the prerequisites and all tasks in a section to enable the respective fee.

Tip

We recommend setting up a group fee. This way, any merchants boarded to that group in the future will automatically incur the same transaction fee as soon as they begin processing payments.

Note

Creating a transaction fee uses a two-part fee setup that involves the creation of multiple fees:

  1. Set up a flat rate fee for all credit card authorizations.

  2. Set up a percentage fee for credit card captures.

This model most closely resembles industry-standard payment processing fees: Flat Fee + % of the transaction total.

Prerequisites

Before attempting this tutorial, you must:

Set Up a Transaction Fee for a Group of Merchants

Complete all steps in the following sections.

Open the Group Profile

  1. Click GROUPS in the left navigation panel to open the Groups page.

  2. Locate the group in the table and select any information in the table row to open the Group Profile page.

Add a Flat Rate Fee to All Credit Card Authorizations

  1. Click FEES in the list of tabs on the left-hand side of the page.

  2. Click ADD FEE in the upper-right corner of the page to open the Add Fee dialog on the page.

  3. Click the When to Trigger the Fee dropdown menu and choose AUTH.

    Tip

    To trigger a fee when a refund transaction is processed, select REFUND from the dropdown menu. You can set up a refund trigger in addition to the authorization trigger.

  4. Click the How Much is the Fee dropdown menu and then select ACTUAL.

  5. Enter the fee in the Amount field.

    Tip

    If you’re unsure of how much to charge for a specific fee type, refer to the Visa and Mastercard card brand network guidelines.

  6. (Optional) Click ADVANCED OPTIONS to open the Advanced section, where you can add a charging entity, collection information, or conditional rules for the fee.

  7. Click ADD to finish the setup.

Result: The fee is now visible in the Group Profile Fees tab and will trigger whenever a credit card authorization occurs.

Set Up a Transaction Fee for an Individual Merchant

Complete all steps in the following sections.

Open the Merchant Profile

  1. Click MERCHANTS in the left navigation panel to open the Merchants page.

  2. Locate the merchant in the table and select any information in the table row to open the Merchant Profile page.

Add a Flat Rate Fee to All Credit Card Authorizations

Complete all steps listed in the earlier Add a Flat Rate Fee to All Credit Card Authorizations section.

Result: The fee is now visible in the Merchant Profile Fees tab. The fee automatically triggers any time the merchant performs a transaction authorization.

Add a Percentage Fee to All Credit Card Captures

  1. If you have navigated away from the page, click FEES in the list of tabs on the left side of the Merchant Profile page.

  2. Click ADD FEE in the upper-right corner of the page to open the Add Fee dialog on the page.

  3. Click the When to Schedule Fee dropdown menu and choose CAPTURE.

  4. Click the How Much is the Fee dropdown menu and then select PERCENTAGE.

  5. Enter the percentage value in the Amount field.

  6. (Optional) Click ADVANCED OPTIONS to open the Advanced section, where you can add a charging entity, collection information, or conditional rules for the fee.

  7. Click ADD to finish setup.

Result: The fee is now visible in the Merchant Profile Fees tab. The fee automatically triggers any time the merchant performs a transaction capture.
